No FOs, just some jabber

My husband and I got some pictures of my Curly Girl-i-fied curls last night, in an effort to encourage an internet-only friend of mine to give CG one more try. Check these out:

Im ready for my close-up, Mr. Zanuck!

I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. Zanuck!

If you have straight hair, or soft, silky waves, you will not appreciate how precious it is to me to see these pretty Shirley-Temple-esque ringlets on my very own head. If, on the other hand, you have wild, crazy, puffy, curly BIG hair, you’ll get it. So if you haven’t yet attempted a CG routine, head on over to and learn all about it. Or just buy the Lorraine Massey book, “Curly Girl”, which goes for under $10 at most book stores.

‘Nuff said about the hair. I’m still plugging away on Tuscany, and it gets bigger and prettier each day. I’ve been ignoring my sock all week, however, in favor of the shawl, from which I’m getting far greater enjoyment at the moment. And now I’ve got my underthings all in a bunch to start a garment…any garment…Ok, not really “any” garment, but I’ve just got a hankering to knit “Krista” by Joan McGowan-Michael, of White Lies Designs and “Knitting Lingerie Style” fame. And there’s three!! different sweaters/tops (at least!) in the new issue of Interweave Knits that have my needles tingling, and my wallet straining to open up and buy more yarn. Sadly, all five of my plastic fileboxes are full, full, full, what with one thing and another. They’ll empty out some when I finish Tuscany, of course, and there’s some stuff that I could probably RAK away, but still…no more yarnz for me till I knit up some of the stash! Phooey. I want yarnz. Now. Not later. Now. sigh…

Plenty of purple passion and a little less pay

Not too much new in my little world right now, just plenty of knitting, running around the Nashville area to tooooo many guitar shops, and some lovely economic stressors.  On the plus side, we received our tax refund in a nice, timely fashion on the day after my birthday.  On the minus side, my employer announced a company-wide cut in base pay last week, in response to expected but disappointing financials.  So, since the company’s financials are suffering in the recession, so must mine.  Ugh.

I’ve been plugging away fairly steadily at my Tuscany shawl and it’s looking really nice.  I’m not much for progress pics, but I might actually have to try some.  As previously noted, it’s being knitted in Ella Rae Silkience in a pretty shade of purple, almost a mauve, really.  I’m also knitting very slowly on my deep grape-y purple bamboo-soy socks in Crystal Palace Panda Soy.  The color, called Grape Soda, looks just like it sounds.  It’s delish.  And I’m having a much better time knitting that yarn with the Knit Picks Harmony dpns than I did with the Knit Picks Options dpns.  Not sure why that is, except maybe that it’s a bit less slick and pointy.

Oy.  Husband and 13 year old are attempting to play their new guitars at the moment.  After weeks and weeks and weeks of wrangling around (and a failed amplifier purchase, a failed guitar purchase and a successful amplifier purchase), I think husband has finally found the Guitar of His Dreams…for now.  It’s a Paul Reed Smith SE Custom 24 in a pretty color called Whale Blue (lol!).  Unfortunately, when we were at Guitar Center to allow husband time to pet and play with a different guitar that he thought was the one of his dreams,  13 year old son fell in love with an Epiphone SG Special II in cherry.  You guessed it.  There was a small sale, so both wound up coming home with us.  Oy.  So much for my yarny dreams for a while – at least until I can craigslist some of the less-loved musical instruments/gear that husband has collected in the last 18 months.  And that would annoy me a whole lot less if either one of them actually knew how to play!

But they don’t, really. So I listen to a lot of parts of songs, with never an entire one being played. And when they are both practicing at once, sometimes I get treated to parts of two different songs at once! LOL! I love them both, and I’m glad that they have a shared interest and all that, but WHY couldn’t they have chosen a more quiet hobby??

Purple Yarn and Golden Knitters

So.  I’ve had a birthday.  I’m no longer in my 40’s.  Not incredibly upset about that, either.  And I expected that I would be.  I mean, after all, a 50th wedding anniversary is golden, right?  So shouldn’t my 50th birthday mean that I’ve entered my so-called “golden” years?  More on that later.  Actually, more on everything later – must go knit and watch the telly.  🙂

Taking a little break during the commercial to say that I’m in the midst of knitting the Tuscany shawl by Amy Singer of knitty fame. I chose Ella Rae Silkience in a lovely shade of dusty purple for the shawl, because I didn’t want to spend $120+ on Handmaiden Fine Yarns Silken, which is the yarn for which the pattern originally called. Sigh…I’m just way to cheap for my own good, I guess (LOL!).  I’m about 4 pattern repeats in, and it looks great – not as light and airy as it should, probably, but it will be beautiful and actually provide some sort of warmth when it’s done.  Plus it may block out better.  I love this yarn – it knits up so smoothly, and it’s not particularly splitty (which is usually a huge problem with anything cotton and/or bamboo), plus it has a beautiful shine to it, and great drape.  I don’t even particularly like swatching, but I do confess that my test swatch for gauge took up the majority of an entire ball of yarn, just because it was so very pleasant to knit!

I finally jumped on the facebook wagon train this week – what an incredible time suck that thing is!  Within three minutes of signing on, I already had 2 friends, a gift and an IM.  Oy!  It’s been less than a week now, and I think I’m up to about 30 friends and could spend the entire day sending silly hugs, drinks, Valentines, candles, and playing the Mafia game, if I (a) wanted to and (b) had the time do it!  Eeek!  You can get totally lost in facebook.  Beware!
